Outstanding Students
Here are a few of the winning entries!
- Brian Abert, SCCO, CA, “Adventures in Vision”
-
Illustrated a book with photographs and hand-drawn cartoons to enforce healthy vision, the importance of eyewear and eye education. The book features a green dinosaur who guides a boy through a day of vision education. A playful attitude is created through rhyming and colorful photographs.
- Radbert Chin, Ja-Hyung Lee, Anhthy Trinh and Cleo Yeh, New England Collage of Optometry, “Every Year”
-
Composed a music video to enforce the importance of yearly eye examinations for pediatric patients and parents. The song is to the original tune of “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz; and the lyrics explain an eye exam in a manner young children can understand.
- Rachel Irwin, Whitney Fahrman and Anna Opydo, New England College of Optometry, “Kindergarten Curriculum”
-
Sent lesson plans to teachers on sun safety education. Three curricula were tailored to the learning levels of kindergarteners, grades three to four and grades six to eight. All focused on the potential damage that can result from UV and included suggestions for classroom activities and/or homework.
- Brittany Bishop, Baker College, “The Importance of Sunglasses”
-
Developed slides presenting background information on UV light and the types of UV, potential diseases that can stem from UV damage, ways to defend against UV radiation and tips to consider when purchasing UV-blocking glasses.
- Marian Considine, Erie Community College, “Healthy Sight Counseling for Baby Boomers”
-
Created a presentation focused on the largest demographic in America – Baby Boomers – as they face possible age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. The entry encourages Boomers to use sun protection for their eyes, and to guard also against wrinkles and skin cancer.
